Dolly Mixture Fidget was born on 3rd February 2003 and adopted by Jack, the boy who also adopted Scarecrow, Chestnut, Scruff, Cherry and Scrabble. He was the twin brother of my beloved Cherub, who was paraplegic and went to The Bridge on her 5 week birthday, breaking my heart, and of my daughter's pig, Red Dandy, who later crossed the English Channel three times before slipping to The Bridge before his third birthday. Fidget was actually adopted on the day his twin sister went to The Bridge, and my partner, who was supervising the adoption, was in such a state that he forgot we had already identified Fidget as male. So he was adopted as a cagemate for girlies Scarecrow, Chestnut, Cherry and Scruff. When I returned from my trip abroad I alerted Jack's mother to the mistake, and Fidget was kept "in solitary" until I was bought 5 females in May 2003 and discovered one of them to be in fact male, whereupon he was introduced to his beloved cagemate, Scrabble.
Fidget, like Scrabble, was always a very friendly pig to humans. He loved to be cuddled and was very vocal, more so than Scrabble, who let him get on with it. He also liked to chat with neighbouring male piggies through the bars of his cage or the wire of his run. Like Scrabble, he enjoyed being an outdoor piggie in the summer, and loved to sunbathe and munch the grass and dandelions. He did have a couple of problems with his eyes, including at one point a hay seed which actually germinated and had started growing inside his eye by the time I found it, but thankfully he always recovered with the aid of eye drops and ointments, and he was always very patient when receiving such treaments.
He loved to eat and always had a good appetite, but in the autumn of 2007, he started rapidly losing weight, in spite of eating as much as ever. I wormed him and he seemed to rally for a while, but then started shedding the weight again. He never seemed ill, still as talkative and lively as ever. But on the morning of 19th March 2008, I found he had left for The Rainbow Bridge during the night - he was aged 5 years and just over a month. His poor cagemate Scrabble was devastated, as were we all, but at least he had gone to be reunited at The Bridge with his mother, Poivre, his sister, Cherub and his brother, Red Dandy, none of whom made it to the grand old age of 5.
